Song Selection When choosing songs,I prefer to “teach up” rather than to “teach down”. I typically don’t select songs that only appeal to the younger children. I have found that during ministry events with combined ages, it’s extremely important to keep the older ones engaged. They need to think that it’s “cool” to worship God. Then, in turn, the younger kids will follow because they want to be just like the older ones. I once had the church choir director voice concerns that my song selection was too difficult for the 3 yrs olds. All I knew was that my own 2 yrs old was totally engaged and loving the songs! It’s also important to repeat the songs often enough that the kids learn them. Introduce new songs slowly. If you are going to be using certain songs during the year, use the worship during VBS to teach some of the songs. Give parents a list of songs or CDs that you will be using and encourage them to purchase the CD or the songs individually via iTunes. Also- a word about burning CDs and giving away the music. Right now, there’s not a good system in place when you want to make multiple copies of CDs for your ministry that contain songs from a variety of places. Maybe in the future, iTunes will have an option to pay for multiple copies of a song without having to download the same song multiple times. I have had churches call me and request making 35 copies of a song for their entire kids choir. Since Christ Music Kids pays the royalties for individual downloads of songs on our CDs, the church paid us $1 per copy, which I in turn paid the respective royalties. This is also the reason why we are providing churches with bulk order discounts. This is to help make it affordable to purchase multiple copies of our CD to give out to your teachers, kids choir, VBS, etc., while still providing the payment to the artist. As Christians, we need to model right from wrong. If we say stealing is a sin, then we need to be good role models by not stealing. I don’t mean to be harsh about this issue, but it’s something I feel strongly about. Many artists making the music that we use are by no means rich. The cost of producing music is costly and some are really struggling to support themselves or their ministry. We are obligated to do our part to support them and their ministry by purchasing the music.
